On Saturday 25 July 2009, dutch national channel Radio 6 featured a special on Kaushiki Chakrabarty in VPRO’s world music programme De Wandelende Tak. The programme’s host Walter Slosse interviewed me on Kaushiki’s career and music.
I also selected the music that was played in the programme, great music of course! The programme is still available for listening on demand.

The programme was highligted as ‘radio programme of the day’ – with a photo (see above) of Kaushiki added and with additional info elsewhere on the same page (see below) – in the VPRO-guide (no.30, 25-31 July 2009), Holland’s best TV&Radio Guide.

Two years ago I portrayed Kaushiki in my radioprogramme Gharana and this episode is still ‘on demand’ available on the Concertzender website and I’ve also published a Youtube-portrayal of Kaushiki and some clips of her great Amsterdam concert in April 2007. Check it out, it’s great to hear and see her in performance!

Night of the Overtones 6-hour Concertzender-night special 7 March 2009

Saturday 7 March, at 24.00hrs, another great 6-hour night programme is broadcast on De Concertzender, produced by me, Pieter de Rooij, and by Charlie Crooijmans. You can listen to a great selection of overtone music from all over the world in all its manifestations. From 00.00hrs till 03.00AM a 3-hour special on overtone singing is presented, a rebroadcast of a special I made in 2003. Recently I was listening again to some excerpts of this programme and I thought a rebroadcast would be a great service to our listeners, because radiospecials on overtone singing are nowhere to be found, and my programme really offers a great selection of music of a high artistic level and some of the recordings can’t be found in any musicstore. The great thing is that after this rebroadcast you can listen to these recordings permanently online ‘on demand’, whenever you want.
I decided to make this 3-hour special in 2003 after finishing one of the most interesting books on music I’ve ever come across, “Overtone Singing: Physics and Metaphysics of Harmonics in East and West”, written by dutch overtone singer and musicologist Mark van Tongeren. Overtone singing is a technique by which a single human voice can simultaneously produce two or more clearly audible tones, usually a low drone with seemingly independant tones high above it.

I was so impressed by this book that I decided to make a radio programme on overtone singing, using Mark as ‘tour guide’. He explains the physics and metaphysics of overtone singing and demonstrates several techniques of overtone singing. The book covers its physical and metaphysical aspects and its practice in both East and West. Mark studied throat singing in Tuva, Southern Siberia, and today, Mark is still performing and continuing his research.

The interview with Mark is in dutch, but for people who don’t understand dutch, I’m sure the programme will nevertheless be a worthwhile listen. Have a look at the playlist below and you can already figure out why I can say this.

One more detail on the 3-hour special: the first hour is presented by great colleague and friend Bart Vonk (1964-2006). I’m sure many people will love to hear Bart once more. It was pure coincidence that Bart was presenting here the first hour of the programme. Since it was a live-broadcast and the regular presenter Paulo Folkertsma didn’t show up in time -he got stuck in the traffic and was delayed- Bart took over and courageously presented my script, while I was answering phonecalls in the studio (I received some nice calls from listeners that evening). In this way Bart really saved my programme’s first hour. The second and third hour Paulo Folkertsma is ‘taking over’. So, in retrospect, here’s my “Well done, Bart!”

After my special The Night of the Overtones continues at 03.00 AM with Charlie Crooijmans’ programming of a fascinating two hours of overtone music by dutch Mouthharptrio Aubergine (03.00-04.00 AM) and by Swiss gong player Verena Jenny (04.00-05.00 AM).

Then, the night finishes with my programming of a unique and very special recording and certainly one of my alltime top favourite recordings. From 05.00 to 06.00 AM I’ve scheduled a fantastic 60-minute recording of singer Okna Tsagan Zam from the Republic of Kalmykia. He gives a spellbinding, mesmerising performance of the Dzjangar epic. It’s a great, never commercially released ‘must-hear’-recording. Nowhere for sale! Don’t miss it!

Six-hour tribute-programme on Sandy Denny, De Concertzender, May 10, 2008, 1:00am-7:00am, dutch time

From early youth I’ve been a great admirer of Sandy Denny’s voice and music.

Sandy Denny (1947-1978)

She’s one of the most legendary singers in the history of english folk music. On April 21st 1978 she died at the age of 31, after a fall down of the stairs, now thirty years ago. She’s once more featured on De Concertzender in a special tribute-broadcast devoted to her work, on Saturday May 10th, in the entire late-night programme De Nacht, from1:00am-7:00am, dutch time (!). You can listen online via internet. For me and evry other devoted admirer of her work it’s a not-to-be-missed transmission. On De Concertzender-website there’s a complete playlist. Another fine example of the unique musical journeys brought to the listener by De Concertzender. If you’ll miss it you can always listen on demand afterwards. This is very simple, but if still not clear you can turn to De Concertzender’s ‘how to listen on demand’-explanation.

My addition to ’50 Great Moments in World Music History’, published in Songlines no.51 (April/May 2008)

In March 2008 the renowned world music magazine ‘Songlines’ celebrated its 50th issue. Alongside the regular articles and reviews there were some special features, one of them a list of ’50 Great Moments in World Music’, covering some remarkable musical happenings from evry corner of our planet over the past 7000 years.

At the bottom of the list the editors humbly added that the Songlines-list just appears to be ‘a snapshot’ of all the numerous great moments in the history of world music. Therefore Songlines invited readers to write about other great musical moments, ‘missing links’, that also deserve to be mentioned. Since I like to see things listed and could easily sum up some other ‘Great Moments’ I wrote to Songlines and suggested 5 more ‘key moments’ in recent world music history, from the world premiere of Colin McPhee’s ‘Tabuh-Tabuhan’ in 1936, to the remarkable success of the overtone record ‘Hearing solar winds’. WERELDMINERALEN – March 22nd, 2008 / sparkling new African and Asian music

For Saturday March 22nd I’ve prepared another nice edition of Wereldmineralen, the sparkling saturday morning non-stop world music-hour of De Concertzender. Featured in this edition are four great recent releases, from Africa and Asia.The programme starts with three tracks from ‘The African’, an album featuring great reggae dance music of singer Tiken Jah Fakoly from Ivory Coast, then Mauretanian singer/songwriter Daby Touré joins the party with a few of his catchy, uplifting African pop songs from his album ‘Stereo Spirit’.
In the second half of the programme I turn and tune your ears to Asian music. Chinese singer Sa Dingding’s album ‘Alive’ features mixes of Chinese tradional melodies and elements derived from western pop, soul and classical music.
For the final twenty minutes I’ve booked some very special and delicate music from ‘Fragile Beauty’, a brilliantly produced album by two of today’s finest Vietnamese musicians, jazz guitarist Nguyen Le and singer Huong Thanh. It’s an impressive album that fuses traditional Vietnamese folk songs with an array of jazz harmonies and global sounds. The very special flavour on this album is provided by Huong Thanh’s enchanting and stunning voice, she’s a brilliant artist. On youtube I published a video featuring the fragile beauty of the album’s title track…’fragile beauty’. Recently the album was welcomed with a Top of the World-review (choose issue 50, March 2008) by Barley Norton in the renowned world music magazine ‘Songlines’. 
So don’t miss this great album and three other nice ones in my next edition of Wereldmineralen.

Kala Ramnath, de ‘zingende viool’, in ‘Gharana’ (Concertzender, 29-2-2008)

De viool is bij uitstek het instrument om de menselijke stem na te bootsen en niemand kan dit beter dan de Indiase violiste Kala Ramnath, begenadigd vertolkster van Noord-Indiase raga’s. Zij kan haar instrument laten zingen en dat levert haar de bijnaam ‘zingende viool’ op.

Op 29 februari schets ik in het eerste halfuur van mijn programma Gharana -over scholen en stijlen binnen de Noord-Indiase ragamuziek- een portret van de 40-jarige violiste in mijn engelstalige documentaire Kala Ramnath- The Singing Violin.

Kala woont al twintig jaar in Mumbai, maar is geboren en getogen in Madras, in een muzikale familie die zowel in de Noord-Indiase als de Zuid-Indiase ragamuziek excelleert en behalve zijzelf op viool nog drie wereldberoemde namen heeft opgeleverd: haar guru en tante N. Rajam, haar oom T.N. Krishnan en haar nicht Sangeeta Shankar.

Niet alleen Kala komt aan het woord, maar ook haar guru, zanger Pandit Jasraj (geb. 1930), die wordt beschouwd als India’s grootste levende vertolker van de Noord-Indiase raga en momenteel als enige de meest prestigieuze muzikale eretitel mag bekleden, namelijk ‘sangeet martand’, oftewel de ‘zon in de muziek’. Pandit Jasraj is vol lof over Kala: ‘Wat kan ik zeggen, zij is alles in muziek, niemand op viool in Noord-India komt in de buurt van haar niveau.’ In mijn programma komen woorden van dezelfde strekking van Derek Roberts, een invloedrijke producer van Indiase klassieke muziek voor het label Sense World Music: ‘We hebben hier echt te maken met een unieke viooldynastie. Kala’s tante N. Rajam is een legendarische violiste die van enorme betekenis is geweest voor de viool in India. Zij heeft een zeer verfijnde, ietwat ingetogen speelstijl. Kala heeft deze kwaliteiten ook in huis, maar heeft tegelijkertijd een hele uitbundige, avontuurlijke persoonlijkheid. Ze slaagt er wonderwel in beide kwaliteiten in haar vioolspel te verenigen. Die combinatie van extreme gevoeligheid en grote uitbundigheid in haar spel is heel bijzonder. Ik denk dan ook dat Kala momenteel de grootste violiste is van Noord-India.’

De viool mag dan Westers zijn, voor het vertolken van raga’s zijn de speeltechniek, de speelhouding –men zit op de grond- en de stemming van het instrument heel anders dan in het Westen. In Indiase ragamuziek gaan versieringen van de melodie veelal gepaard met ‘glijdende tonen’, waarbij subtiele overgangen in de kleinste toonsafstanden, microtonen, van cruciaal belang zijn. Behalve deze techniek verstaat Kala de kunst om lange frasen, die in-één-adem gezongen worden, ook als zodanig op de viool te reproduceren. Zij ontwikkelde daartoe een volmaakte strijktechniek die het mogelijk maakt lange frasen ononderbroken te spelen, zonder dat het ‘wisselen van streek’ de luisteraar nog opvalt.

Naast de klassieke Noord-Indiase raga speelt Kala Ramnath ook veel fusion. Zij speelt in diverse projecten met muzikanten uit de wereld van jazz, Afrikaanse muziek, flamenco en Westerse klassieke muziek. In de documentaire is Kala te horen met haar fusiongroep Yashila en met de Spaanse flamencogitarist Eduardo Niebla. Na de documentaire volgen nog een uur lang diverse opnamen – wederom klassiek-Indiaas en fusion – met onder andere opnamen van het KIT Tropentheater-concert van najaar 2007 van Kala Ramnath’s fusion-groep ‘Four Elements’. Hierin speelt zij met de Nederlandse jazzgitarist Jan Kuiper, tablaspeler Niti Ranjan Biswas en de Marokkaanse percussionist Rhani Krija. Met veel muzikale potjes op het vuur trekt Kala zo voortdurend de hele wereld over en heeft ze in de muziek haar grote levensvervulling gevonden. In haar eigen woorden: ‘Music is my religion, it’s my prayer, it’s everything for me.’

Kala krijgt wereldwijd lof en waardering van pers en publiek en zij won al vele belangrijke muziekprijzen, waaronder de Surmani, Sur Ratna en Pandit Jasraj Gaurav awards. Na het afmonteren van mijn programma kwam mij ter ore dat Kala binnenkort een van de meest prestigieuze Indiase staatsprijzen voor muziek gaat ontvangen: de ‘Kumar Gandharva Award’, de Staatsprijs voor de beste Indiase musicus beneden de 45 jaar. De prijs wordt haar op 8 april uitgereikt, maar al op vrijdag 29 februari kun je in Gharana horen waarom haar die grote eer te beurt valt.
