“A few years ago, my brother and his wife found out that the four month old girl that they were soon to adopt from Ethiopia had fallen ill and passed away. They had been making plans for her, staring endlessly at her picture, and loving her from across the ocean, so the news was devastating.
God’s plans were not for her to ever see the people who had loved her from halfway around the world, but for her to be taken instead to His loving arms. For me, life circumstances (whether euphoric or tragic) don’t usually translate into musical inspiration; the two typically remain separate. The night they received this news, though, I found myself longing to pour out a musical elegy.
My search for a suitable text led me to a picture from a cemetery in my hometown (Elmira, NY), where the great American author Mark Twain and his family are buried. My brother and I, from our youth, have known the poem that Twain placed on the tombstone of his beloved daughter Susy, when she died unexpectedly at age 24 and left him heartbroken.
I was stunned by the bittersweet irony of this text being from our hometown, and in honor of a beloved daughter who died unexpectedly. I wrote this setting that night; it was quickly added to an upcoming concert and premiered only one week later, as an elegy for Etsegenet and a reminder of the orphans of Ethiopia.”

NB: het getoonde portret bij de video is een uitsnede van het schilderij ‘Portret van de danseres Anita Berber‘ (1925), van de Duitse schilder en graficus Otto Dix (1891-1969) – imo zeer goed gekozen.
Van het veelzijdige werk van componiste, pianiste en sound artist Misha Cvijović is op het WERGO-label in februari 2026 een boeiend overzichtsalbum verschenen, getiteld ‘Vida’. Het album is onder andere beschikbaar op streaming platforms als Spotify en Apple Music. De rondgang langs het werk van deze mij voorheen onbekende componiste heeft me aangenaam verrast en heb ik al menigmaal beluisterd. Ik werd onder meer direct gegrepen door het uit 2013/14 daterende orkestwerk ‘Lica Persefone’, een prachtstuk waarin Cvijović zonder verlies van eigenheid een sterke invloed van Messiaen laat doorklinken.
Luister maar…
Op het album ‘Vida’ staat van Misha Cvijovic nog ander fraai werk, in kleinere (kamer)bezetting en in elektronische setting. Voor wie geïnteresseerd is in hedendaagse muziek is ‘Vida’ een absolute aanrader.
Een ‘bravo!’ voor dit schitterend Liedrecital van de wereldberoemde mezzo-sopraan Elīna Garanča, met pianist Matthias Schulz – Operahuis van Zürich, 19 september 2025. Op het programma werk van Brahms, Schumann, Berlioz, Duparc, Mascagni, Bizet.

I uploaded a video on my YouTubechannel dedicated to Mary Bee Cuddy, the leading female character in The Homesman (USA, 2014), a film directed by Tommy Lee Jones.
Wikipedia tells us: “The film shows the unsparingly harsh and difficult life of early settlers of the American Midwest in the 1850s. The Homesman has been called a ‘feminist western’. Critics have noted that the lives of women during this time are rarely explored, as opposed to men, (…).”
I am impressed by the story of Mary Bee Cuddy (played by Hillary Swank), the courageous and compassionate leading female character in The Homesman.
Except for one, all photos in the video are stills from the film (btw: notice my choice for presenting them in ‘sepia big grain’), and most of them focus on Mary Bee Cuddy.
I combine these shots with music by John Adams: Christian Zeal and Activity, as I tend to associate this piece of music with Cuddy’s character and outlook on life. IMHO John Adams‘ music and the stills from The Homesman offer a good combination of auditive and visual Americana. I hope you’ll grasp that unmistakeable Americana-feel as you watch the video.
De piepjonge Tsjechische pianiste Natalie Schwamova (geboren in augustus 1999) heeft alles in huis waar je als liefhebber van klassieke pianomuziek de oren voor spitst en van gaat watertanden. Zij beschikt over een formidabele techniek en haar interpretaties zijn om van te smullen, een traktatie voor de oren.
Ik sta versteld van de muzikale volwassenheid die zij al op zo jonge leeftijd op het klavier tentoonspreidt. Tot in de puntjes beheerst zij het métier van verhalen vertellen met en in muziek. Wat een weldaad.
Geen wonder dat zij al prestigieuze muziekprijzen won en in de internationale muziekwereld de aandacht op zich gevestigd weet.
Geen twijfel mogelijk: van deze jongedame gaan we nog veel horen.
Componist, compositie en uitvoerende wonderwel in symbiose: zeldzaam mooi vind ik deze vertolking van Schubert‘s pianosonate D.960 door Mitsuko Uchida.
