Concertzender Wereldmineralen 2 Sept. 2010 / African and Asian music

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

My edition of Concertzender’s 60-minute radioprogramme Wereldmineralen on 2 September 2010 features recent releases of African and Asian world music. You can listen to the programme via www.concertzender.nl , broadcast time is 19.00-20.00hrs (dutch time). After broadcast you can listen ‘on demand’ via this link.
In the first half hour there’s African music, starting with the album ‘La Difference’ of Salif Keïta from Mali, followed by the album ‘Télévision’ of Baaba Maal from Senegal. Then there’s a selection of recently released seventies Afrobeat-music from the sampler album ‘Nigeria Afrobeat Special’. In the second half hour the programme features new releases with music from Asia, starting with the album ‘He who travels far’ (release in September 2010) of Chinese-Mongolian band Hanggai. This group blends rock with traditional Mongolian music and overtone singing. The final part of the programme features music from the album Stringstruck by sitar maestro Purbayan Chatterjee.

An article on Purbayan Chatterjee’s recent fusion projects / In: Hindustan Times, August 15th, 2010

With his band Stringstruck Purbayan Chatterjee created an album of fusion music that earned him in July 2010 the award of ‘world music album of the year’ in India. Pleasant and striking surprises on Stringstruck are Purbayan Chatterjee’s singing and his playing on the dwo, an electric sitar.

Bulgarian band Artery: article radio-portrait in 2001 + clip from that period

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

In 2001 I made a radio-portrait of Artery, a Bulgarian band -led by bouzouki player and singer Yanko Brekov- that plays what one could call ethno-metal, a refreshing mix of hardcore metal (what made them famous in Bulgaria in the nineties), Greek rebetica and several styles from the Balkan region.
I wrote this short introduction to my documentary ‘Balkan Underground in Amsterdam’, it’s in dutch. Below this short article you’ll find a YouTube-clip of Artery from the period around 2000 when I made the radio-documentary on the band. I wonder how these guys are doing these days :)

Documentary: hindusthani ragaplaying cellist Saskia Rao de Haas + ENGLISH TRANSLATION + pics added!

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Click here to listen to my 2002 radio documentary ‘Playing around India’ (original dutch title: ‘Op streek in India’) - mostly in dutch, but also some segments in english - on hindusthani ragaplaying cellist Saskia Rao-de Haas. The great thing is that non-dutch people can completely follow what’s being said throughout the documentary, since below Saskia’s picture in this blog you can click on a picture that contains the complete TRANSLATION IN ENGLISH of the speakers in the programme + time indication + beautiful pictures!

saskia-rao-de-haas

From the Netherlands Saskia moved to Delhi to continue her musical career there and to live there with her husband, famous sitar player Shubhendra Rao who’s also featured in the programme. The documentary was very well received and was broadcasted several times by de Concertzender and by Radio Netherlands. I think the documentary - listen here - is definitely worth a listen for evryone interested in this kind of music.

And by clicking on the picture below - click a few times to enlarge to the right size - you can read a COMPLETE ENGLISH TRANSLATION of the speakers in the programme with time indication and pictures added! The (very good) translation was done by Mike Wilcox.

On Friday 29 May -from 21.00 to 22.30 PM, dutch time- there’ll be a broadcast of a new episode of Gharana, my programme on Indian classical music for Holland’s finest musicstation, the Concertzender. This time the programme focuses on Chitravina N. Ravikiran (b.1967), a celebrated musician in South Indian carnatic music. He has been labeled ‘the Mozart of India’ by critics. He’s a virtuoso on a lute called the chitravina. It’s the world’s oldest fretless slide instrument still being played. Ravikiran was a prodigy and he became famous already at the age of two (more…)
