Oude lp’s met meesterlijke ragavertolkingen op gitaar, sitar en bansuri in Concertzender’s Wereldmineralen van 31 juli 2026

In het door mij samengestelde Concertzender-programma Wereldmineralen zijn in de aflevering van 31 juli 2026 bijzondere opnamen te horen van Noord-Indiase ragamuziek op gitaar, sitar en bansuri (Indiase bamboefluit), afkomstig uit mijn eigen elpeecollectie.

‘Scaling New Horizons With Guitar’ is een vroege avond-raga op gitaar door Brij Bhushan Kabra (1937-2018), van zijn elpee ‘Scaling New Horizons With Guitar’. In de 20ste eeuw was hij de pionier van de ragavertolking op gitaar. Om raga’s op de Indiase manier op gitaar te kunnen spelen, paste hij snaren van de gitaar aan en ontwikkelde er een nieuwe, geschikte speeltechniek voor.

Ustad Imrat Hussain Khan (1935-2018) kwam uit een roemrijke muzikantenfamilie en was de jongere broer van sitargrootheid Ustad Vilayat Khan. Raga Shree komt van de B-kant van het album ‘Surbahar/Sitar‘ (1974). Imrat Hussain Khan speelt hier op gewone sitar de vroege avond-raga Shree. Op kant A van het album speelt hij deze raga op de surbahar, een bas-sitar.

Hariprasad Chaurasia (bansuri) ; Shafaat Ahmed Khan (tabla)

Een vertolking van een late avond-raga door de beroemde bansuri-fluitspeler Hariprasad Chaurasia (1938). Qua scholing komt hij uit de stal van de Senia Maihar-traditie en hij is leerling van de legendarische muzikante Annapurna Devi (1927-2018).

Tot besluit bansuri-fluitspeler Hariprasad Chaurasia met een vertolking van de vroege avond-raga Puriya Dhanashri in beknopte ‘miniatuur’-uitvoering. De opname is te vinden op de Raga Guide, een internationaal veelgeprezen prestigieus project – bestaande uit een boek en 4 muziekcd’s – waarbij 74 voorname raga’s worden geanalyseerd en ten gehore gebracht.

Oude lp’s met meesterlijke ragavertolkingen op sarod en sitar in Concertzender’s Wereldmineralen

In het door mij samengestelde Concertzender-programma Wereldmineralen, zijn in de aflevering van 29 mei 2026 bijzondere opnamen te horen van Noord-Indiase ragamuziek op sarod en sitar, afkomstig van elpees uit de jaren zestig en zeventig.

De sitar is een langhalsluit met verplaatsbare fretten, heeft melodiesnaren, ritmesnaren en een aantal resonantiesnaren. De sarod is een veel kleinere luit dan de sitar, heeft geen fretten, en heeft door een andere bouw en speeltechniek een heel andere klank. Wel heeft de sarod, net als de sitar melodiesnaren, ritmesnaren en een groot aantal resonantiesnaren.

In de uitzending komen opnamen van drie elpees aan bod. Twee van de drie, eentje van Amjad Ali Khan uit 1970 en eentje van Sharan Rani uit 1962, komen uit mijn eigen platencollectie.

Een elpee uit 1970 van sitarspeler Debu Chaudhuri komt niet uit mijn eigen collectie, maar vindt via mij ook z’n weg naar de luisteraar. Voor de liefhebber van ragamuziek is deze uitzending een ware, niet te missen tractatie.

Ter introductie van de instrumenten sarod en sitar begint het programma met een kort muziekfragment waarin sarodspeler Ali Akbar Khan en sitarspeler Ravi Shankar gezamenlijk de raga Hem Bihag vertolken.

The photo of Sharmishta Sen was taken during this concert – the same goes for the photo of tabla player Ananda Gopal Bandopadhyay (shown at the beginning). This recording is not covering her complete performance of this raag – beginning parts are missing, and unfortunately right before the end there’s a fade out.

Echo’s van Ravi Shankar en de sitar-explosie in het Westen – Concertzender-programma uit 2002

Eén van de grootste Indiase musici aller tijden is zonder twijfel sitarspeler Ravi Shankar (1920-2012). In 2002 besteedde de Concertzender in een door mij samengestelde aflevering van het programma Metamorfosen aandacht aan de beroemde sitarspeler die dankzij de Beatles in de jaren zestig een supersterstatus verwierf.
Ravi Shankar heeft een enorm belangrijke rol gespeeld als ambassadeur van de Indiase muziek. De titel van de uitgezonden special – ‘Echo’s van Ravi Shankar en de sitar-explosie in het Westen’ – is niet overdreven. De optredens van Ravi Shankar veroorzaakten destijds een ware sitar-rage en brachten de westerse belangstelling voor Indiase ragamuziek in een stroomversnelling.
In deze uitzending zijn onder andere unieke, door Radio Nederland Wereldomroep gemaakte opnamen van Ravi Shankar te horen uit 1957. Dankzij nauwgezette research werden deze oudste Nederlandse omroepopnamen van Ravi Shankar in januari 2002 ontdekt door Pieter de Rooij, die destijds werkzaam was bij de Wereldomroep als audio-archivaris. One of Holland’s greatest experts on Indian classical music passes away – Felix van Lamsweerde (1934-2021).

I’m saddened by the news of the demise of Felix van Lamsweerde, one of Holland’s greatest experts on Indian classical music. I’ve known Felix for more than thirty years, we often met and spoke each other at ethnomusicological events and at concerts of Indian classical music. He passed away on Saturday 31st of July 2021.

During his career as curator ethnomusicology at the KIT Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam Felix made a huge number of recordings of mostly Indian classical music performances on audio tape, video and film, all of which – along with his writings, photos and other parts of his collection – has moved to the Musicology Department of the University of Göttingen in 2017*. Felix van Lamsweerde is also known for his great contributions to promote and popularize Indian classical music in The Netherlands and abroad.

His passing is a huge loss – he will be dearly missed.

* For the record I’d like to add the following:
When Felix told me he’d been struggling to find a good home to properly house his large, unique collection – he’d tried unsuccessfully at institutions like the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in Hilversum and the University of Amsterdam – I told him he should try abroad, and I suggested I could contact the musicology department of the University of Göttingen, where I saw good opportunities. I told him I could contact prof. Birgit Abels over there and tell her about his collection, asking her if Göttingen would be interested. Felix thought it was a good idea to contact Göttingen and so I did. Prof. Abels was very interested and was very keen to house the collection at her department. And so it happened: Felix’ great collection found a good destination at the Department of Musicology at the University of Göttingen. I’m glad I was able to help Felix in this way to find a good home for his fabulous collection.

A Brief Impression Of My Braaksma Indian Classical Music Collection

By the end of 2018 a friend of mine, Henk Braaksma, who’s been collecting Indian Classical Music (ICM) since the late nineteen-fifties, made me an offer to acquire/buy over his fabulous ICM-collection, consisting of mainly lp’s and tapes, containing most interesting and many great recordings in very good quality and everything very well documented and catalogued as well. Of course I was very enthusiastic and I eagerly accepted his offer, which makes me the proud owner of the ‘Braaksma ICM Collection’. In November 2019 I did a short talk on this collection for a small audience of ethnomusicologists/cultural musicologists and I showed them this video during that presentation.

This video, produced by me and completed in 2006, contains an interview with world famous violinist Kala Ramnath, filmed in Amsterdam, September 2005. Also comments are included from interviews I did in Autumn 2005 with Kala’s guru Pandit Jasraj and with producer/recording engineer Derek Roberts, Head of Production of the Sense World Music label. Earlier on I already published a few excerpts of this video. This is the complete version.

In April 2006 I also filmed a fabulous concert by Kala at RASA in Utrecht. In 2013 I published the entire concert on YouTube.

And in May 2006 I filmed a workshop by Kala at the Rotterdam Conservatory. I intend to publish some of that material as well. When ready I will add a link later on in this blogpost.
