Carnatic singer T.M. Krishna in ‘Gharana’ 31-07-09 on Concertzender

On Friday 31 July 2009, from 21.00 to 22.30 PM (dutch time), Gharana – my Concertzender programme on raga musicians and their performing tradition – features singer T.M. Krishna (b.1976) from Chennai (formerly Madras), one of the young top performers in carnatic -or South Indian- raga music. He’s known for his glowing voice and intense performances. As a young child he became acquainted with music through his mother who ran a music school. At the age of twelve he won the prestigious Spirit of Youth Award and from there his performance career really started. Besides being a singer, Krishna is also a music researcher and a writer on music. One of his latest feats is his performance in Margazhi Raagam, a concertfilm that premiered in Indian movie theatres in December 2008. As a result of an interview with T.M. Krishna in Amsterdam in March 2009, I feature a portrayal of the much-praised singer in this episode of Gharana.
Besides music of Krishna -mostly taken from the Concertzender’s excellent recording of his fabulous concert on 7 March 2009 in Amsterdam- the programme features music by Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer (1908-2003) -one of Krishna’s gurus- and music of two female singers who’ve greatly inspired him, Damal Krishna Pattamal (1919-2009), who died earlier this month and M.S. Subbulakshmi (1916-2004).

In the programme Krishna also talks about his comparative research of style differences in performing carnatic music through history, illustrating this shortly by performing the same raag in two different ways, one version representing today’s practice of singing and the other version representing a mid-nineteenth century conception of performing carnatic music.
After broadcast the programme is available for ‘on demand’-listening.

Another not-to-be missed edition of Gharana featuring great recordings of raga music you won’t hear anywhere else on radio!

  1. The digital world is so wonderful. I am sitting on my balcony in Michigan, USA listening to divine Carnatic music from a radio program in Dutch! Great program and beautiful music offering. Thanks.
